The Friends of University Chapel

The Lee Chapel was renamed University Chapel in June 2021 to reflect its original 19th century name, “College Chapel.” The Washington and Lee University Chapel continues to be an important part of our historic campus where we have prepared young people for personal achievement and public service since the 18th century.

Donations contribute to the on-going maintenance of a century-and-half old historic structure, and moving forward, will help to restore the chapel to its original unadorned design while creating a separate exhibition space featuring Valentine’s sculpture of the recumbent Robert E. Lee and gallery spaces on the lower level. The configured space will more fully celebrate the university’s history as well as maximize the chapel’s function as a central gathering space for university events, concerts, lectures and other activities.
